Follow these 5 Rules to Stay Motivated for Success.

It’s mid-January. And for most of you that means that you’ve already forgotten about your New Year’s resolution. If you need some motivation to keep moving forward, look no further. Here are five things you can do to set yourself ahead of the rest and make this year your best yet:

1. Always be ready for opportunity to strike (or work).

When you are starting to feel that fleeting motivation, open your mind to new opportunities. A closed mind can only lead to negativity or cynicism. Opportunity comes to those who are open to it. Call it whatever you like: fate, coincidence, the law of attraction, it’s all the same. The fact is that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. A cliche but it’s true. Open your mind and opportunity will come.

2. Always be willing to work on yourself (or on your goals).

Once you have your goals in order. You must be willing to work on them and challenge yourself daily. Don’t waste your time doing something with no benefit. Life is not about just going through the motions. Everything you do should have a purpose and meaning. In order to have what others do not, you must being willing to do what others will not.

3. “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” (Not a rule, but a state of being)

This quote comes from one of the most famous motivational speeches on the internet. Eric Thomas has made this simple formula for success. But most will never follow it. Why? Because unsuccessful people will stop reaching for their goals at the first barrier of entry. You must stop at nothing to achieve your goals. No wall is too high and no obstacle is too difficult. Achievement is like air. you need it to live and without it, you will most certainly die.

4. Throw away all distractions that keep you from breathing (a.k.a. succeeding).

Knowledge has been limited to the rich and powerful through out human history. For the first time the internet has provided almost all with access to the information to better their lives. But what do we do with this knowledge and information? The majority do nothing. Our distractions have made dull and uninterested. If anything the internet has made us feel small. We are not small. It is only focus that we lack. Priorities are just as important as goals. Budget your time wisely. Set your priorities straight. Achieve your goals.

5. Act as if money were not option.

What would you do if money were not an option? It’s a tough question, but must work at your goals as if money were not the driving force. What happens when you attach money to your favorite hobby? It becomes a job or work and ultimately less fun. Money will always be a necessity in this world but it does not have to be your ultimate motivation. Your intrinsic values are the most important things that you possess. Decide your values. Live by your morals. Set your goals. Achieve your dreams.

What to Do When You are Feeling Down and Out.

Okay so you’ve finally found what it is you want out of life. Great! And you wrote down a set of SMART goals and how to achieve them. Awesome! You’ve been at it for a month and you’re feeling unstoppable and no one can bring you down. Then…Boom! Your first real rejection. And you’re thinking to yourself, “Wait, I’m doing good things here. I’m fulfilling my dream. I did everything right. Are they not seeing what I’m seeing?” The answer plain and simple is “No”. They don’t see what you see and you can’t blame them. Here’s why:

1. No one knows you as well as you do.

We all live in our own reality. We choose how we are going to process the things that happen to us in our lives. We see everything from our point of view first and then, if we are feeling saintly, we choose to try and see it from someone else’s. No one knows what we do when we are alone. No one can gasp all of our thoughts at every waking moment. No one has seen the things that we’ve seen or done the things we’ve done. Some times that’s good, like for our embarrassing teenage years. And sometimes it’s bad, like when we prepped for that interview all night and it blows up in our faces. You choose what people know about you. You shape their image of you, through your words and actions. No one knows you until you let them. It’s up to you to make yourself important in some else’s eyes.

All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.

2. The world doesn’t owe you a thing.

Everyone has heard about the law of attraction, The Secret or whatever you want to call it. The guiding principle is that what ever you create in you mind the universe will help you to create it in your reality. Some may get this confused as “the world or the universe owes me something”. This is a big mistake. A sense of entitlement is when you know you’ve reached the end. You should be working on your goals for you and for peace of mind. You’re not doing it for anyone else. You’re not doing it for material possessions. You should be dong it so that at the end of the day you go to bed with a clear conscience and excited for tomorrow’s adventures. That leads us to the final reason you can’t blame anyone for not seeing you’re dream.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

3. Your Dream is yours and no one else’s.

No one knows you as well as you do. No one has seen you trying to better yourself every day. The world doesn’t owe you a thing. Even after working your butt off there are billions of forces at play that have an effect on your life. You can’t control them. Except it and move on. Your dream is yours. Your life experience and your work have brought it to fruition. Don’t expect others to see it. It’s not theirs to see.

Think of how Walt Disney felt when he first shared his idea of a talking cartoon full length movie. Or when Steve Jobs said he would put a personal computer in every home. Or when Arnold Schwarzenegger said he wanted to run for office. They all faced rejection and were very open about its importance. But they kept moving forward. Claim your dream. Get back up. Get back out there and you better be willing to die for your dream. Because if you aren’t willing to die for your dream it most certainly will die with you. And no one will ever have know it existed. It’s all up to you. Good Luck!

Setting goals for the “20 something kid”

For the past couple of days I have been truly thinking about where my life is going and the decisions I make on a daily basis. It’s hard today to think about your future, when we are forced to always be thinking about the current moment. Today so many people can’t look up past their own cell phone screens to realize, they are in the middle of the street. This is a metaphor for many things about today’s “youth”, but it’s also real truth for everyone. Wake up, look around and realize that there is so much more than what you are comfortable with.

For some reason we have lost the sense of adventure that made our country what it is. We have forgotten that we are all immigrants of adventurers, who risked it all to come to a strange land to be someone new, better and different. Circumstances are different now for a person in their 20s and you could say that things are only getting worse:

1. Everyone has a degree but no one seems to have a career.

2. Everyone has the money to buy the newest and the best, but they can’t seems to make rent.

3. College loans have crippled us into a life not worth living, so we stay safe.

4. We stay so safe that our lives never grow, hence the “20 something kid”.

We can’t seem to grow because we are always afraid of not being able to make that loan payment. So we stick with the jobs we can get, most in the service industry. Everyone around us is telling us to “stay safe” and “save up”. Save up for what? If I have no goals, I nothing to live for. If I never take that plunge, I’ll never know. Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is what builds character. Your material shit doesn’t make you who you are. Your credit score doesn’t make you who you are. Start building your character today. Take the plunge. I want to live. I want to be my own person. So I set goals every day to accomplish to feel full. I call it homework. If I don’t get my homework done, I’ll “get in trouble”. Give yourself some home work. If you don’t know where to start, I’ll help you. Image

Homework: Sit down in a relaxing place and write down your goals. Goals aren’t, “I want to be happy” or “I want to pay off my loans”. Those aren’t goals and you know it. Write down what you want to achieve in your life and without reservations. You’ll be surprise about what comes out.

It seems that everyone is constantly crying about having all the things in life they wish they didn’t have. “I have no money.” “I have the worst job.” “I have no friends on Facebook.” That last one maybe a little extreme but you get the idea. Why is it that when we are in the company of others the majority of our time is dedicated to talking about the things we hate and the things we wish we had? What would happen if you decided to do the complete opposite? What if your days were filled with nothing but positive thoughts about your own life? Right about now people are done reading and I’ll tell you why. This task is too difficult. Doing something to improve your life is hard. Being a cynic and a complainer is easy.

Every five seconds we are hit with some sort of philosophical quote accompanied by a obscure picture:

Which one do you follow? Do you stay patient and wait for your life to eventually be the way you want? or Do you go out and chase the life of your dreams to get whatever it is you want? The answer is clear. It’s all up to you. Oh no, you read this far only to find out something you know you have heard already. Yeah, you did. Deal with it and read on. If you don’t think your little choices matter and you have no control, think again. The best way to describe how it all depends on you is by using Google Chrome. What? Google Chrome? The message is as simple as it is cliche. That is why Google Chrome is the perfect example of why you have what you don’t want. How does Google chrome work? You use the browser as you would any other browser but there is one big difference, It not only remembers your searches, but it uses them as a basis for advertising on your favorite sites. If you type in “graduate school”, guess what the next one hundred sidebar ads are going to contain. Yes, every grad school under the sun both big and small. It is microcosm for your life and very literal one at that. If all you do is search for the things you hate, what a “coincidence”, they keep showing up again and again in your life. That’s why there is no such thing as coincidence. You are what you search for. You get what you are constantly thinking about. Opportunities come to those who put themselves in positions to receive them. All successful people know this. Now it’s your turn.

In conclusion, you have everything you want already. You choose which cliche quote to follow. You choose which thought to have, just as you choose which shirt to put on. Controlling your thoughts is tough work so start small. What are you Googling? Yes that’s a word. Is it positive? Is it negative? Does it make you a better person or closer to your dreams? If not, let some other loser reap the “benefits” of that search. You’re too busy searching for how to better your life. The world is at your fingertips. What are you going to search for next?
