Batman Motivation Part 1: Batman Begins & The Will to Act

It doesn’t matter when you were born, if it was after May of 1939, you know who Batman is. The Batman of the past decade has been that of Christopher Nolan, and what a hero he is. We have since come full circle in the trilogy of The Dark Knight and many have become enamored with these films for their action, adventure, hero and villains. But there are some things many audience members missed (as Chris Nolan often enjoys) while siting through 456 action-packed minutes. We all can be Batman. I’m not talking about heading to a Superhero convention in California. We all can be a little like Batman and use his philosophy to improve our lives and the lives of others. Here is some truly inspiration Batman motivation:

Part 1. Batman Begins

Chris Nolan set the stage early, here’s the already motivational first trailer for the film.

more than a man

Henri Ducard: You traveled the world… Now you must journey inwards… to what you really fear… it’s inside you… there is no turning back. Your parents’ death was not your fault. Your training is nothing. The will is everything. If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, you become something else entirely. Are you ready to begin?

Even though this inspirational first line was spoken by a villain, it is no less true. We alone are nothing and can be easily discouraged or destroyed. But with a definite set of ideals, goals, dreams, nothing is unconquerable. What ideals do you stand for? What goals do have set? What do you dream your world to be? You can become someone else entirely.

Thomas Wayne: And why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.

Falling and failure is much more common than achieving and success. You must treat failures of both past and present as stepping stones to better tomorrow. When you first burned yourself playing with fire, you didn’t swear off fire forever did you? Then why put off the life of your dreams because you got burned a little? Failure is just another opportunity to succeed.

the will

Henri Ducard: The training is nothing! The will is everything!

How many times have you asked someone about their plans and they tell you they are waiting until they are “ready”? Ready for what? Oh the time is not “perfect”? Skill does come from hours of working on your craft but until you push yourself over the edge your going to be training for that same goal at age 87. It is that push or will to act that sets you apart. And if you fail? I ask again; “Why do we fail?”

Bruce Wayne: People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I’m flesh and blood, I can be ignored, I can be destroyed; but as a symbol… as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting.

How true is that? People most certainly do need examples to shake them up. We are becoming more apathetic as a society. Don’t expect others to care about your ideals, goals or dreams. They were not given to them to show the world. That is your job. You must become the fighting force in your own life and show others the importance of your work through your actions. Your dreams are yours. Achieve them for yourself first and only then will other take notice.

Bruce Wayne: …It’s not who I am underneath… but what I do… that defines me.

It all comes to a point with this final quote from batman. You can be a great person and have good intentions but if your not making things happen what is the point? You have you the ideals for foundation and the training to implement them. Now what? Act! The will to act is everything. What you do defines you. Now get up off that couch and start doing some Bruce Wayne push ups!

Keep Moving Forward
